Twice-Exceptional Screening Checklist

Might my child be twice-exceptional?

Rule of thumb: If some of these items describe your child, consult a physician about screening and enrichment/acceleration options.:

Early childhood clues (0–6)

Twice-Exceptional  children are gifted and have a learning, attention, or developmental difference. They show advanced strengths alongside real struggles, and thrive when they get both enrichment for their talents and supports for their needs.

Might my child be twice-exceptional (gifted + a learning difference)?

Look for an uneven pattern— clear strengths alongside real struggles:

Profile & Learning

Advanced vocabulary/ideas but weak spelling, handwriting, or math facts

Excellent verbal discussion but avoids or resists writing/drawing

Excellent writing/drawing but avoids verbal discussions

Strong problem-solving yet slow on timed or multi-step tasks

Performance varies widely day to day (“can” one day, “can’t” the next)

Early Academic/Play Signs

Reads or decodes early but struggles to summarize or organize thoughts

Understands math concepts but trips on counting facts or word-problem setup

Knows the material yet tests poorly

Hyper-focus on interests; distractible with routine work

Knows letters/sounds but avoids coloring, cutting, tracing (fine-motor fatigue)

Executive Function

  Loses materials

Forgets instructions without visual or stepwise supports

Starts but doesn’t finish; difficulty breaking tasks into steps

Meltdowns after school (held it together all day, then crashes at home)

Hard time with transitions or switching tasks

Social–Emotional & Sensory

High anxiety or big frustration around tasks that seem “easy” for peers

Quick, quirky humor (puns/one-liners) that can mask avoidance

Work avoidance to protect self-esteem (jokes, perfectionism, procrastination)

Sensory sensitivities (noise, clothing textures, smells) that derail activities

Motor & Communication

Handwriting slow/messy; tight pencil grip; tires quickly

Speech/language quirks (word-finding, literal interpretations, unclear articulation)

Creativity & Output

Abundant ideas and imaginative play, but difficulty getting ideas “out” under pressure (drawing/writing/speaking)

  Creative Problem Solving
